CREATING THE WHOLE LOOK

(And Nothing BUT the Whole Look)

Coordinate your look: As important as it is to find the right hat for your head, it should never be viewed as a separate item from the rest of your ensemble. What truly "makes or breaks" your look is coordinating your look from the top of your head to the tip of your toes. This tip is NOT intended to deplete your checking account. Rather it is designed to help you focus.

In addition to making sure your hat complements your complete outfit, it should also be proportionately good for your height and stature.

Be careful that the hat and your outfit are not both so strong that you are overdone.  Lots of trim on a hat generally needs a more simplified outfit, rather than a bold print, stripe, etc.

Consider the color(s)) of the clothing in your closet: While having hats in every shade is desirable, it is not usually feasible. Therefore, purchase two simple hats in basic colors such as black and beige. If possible, buy them in both light and heavier weight.

The color of the outfit with which the hat is to be worn must also be considered.  If the hat matches the color of the outfit exactly, it is important to introduce at least one other color into the outfit.  If the hat is to be a contrasting color, it must be a color tHAT complements the outfit.

Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize: Review the tips under "Decorating Your Hat." Find inexpensive scarves or ribbon in your favorite colors to tie around the crown; purchase flowers in your favorite hues to pin on the front, side, or back of your bonnet. Go to the craft stores and buy feathers, if you're really feeling daring.

Wear clothes tHAT fit properly, in styles tHAT are best for you: If you've put on a few pounds, admit it, and buy the next size up. You'll look thinner, if your clothes "hang" a bit! If a style is designed for an age bracket that no longer applies, accept it and give it to your daughter. Keep the color of your hat darker than the color of your shoes.

The right style and fit for clothes and shoes and purse and jewelry come in all price ranges. Just don't forget that million dollar smile!
